As the new Government Buying Standards come into force this month - requiring at least 10% of primary raw food ingredients in food and drink to be produced to certified or assured higher level environmental standards, LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming) is urging farmers growing commodity products such as potatoes and other vegetables, to adopt its Integrated Farm Management (IFM) as an affordable and practical solution to producing good food with care for the environment.

The Archway Foundation is having a sensory outing to Broughton Grounds Farm on Saturday 2 July, to raise awareness of the distress caused by loneliness.
Friends and staff will be visiting the farm near Banbury, to take part in the ‘Let nature feed your senses’ project. This exciting opportunity is run by LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming) and the Sensory Trust to provide hands-on and sensory-rich experiences for people who cannot access the countryside because of age, ability or social situation.

Three leading farming, natural environment and education organisations, LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming), FACE (Farming and Countryside Education) and Natural England, have joined forces to help farmers plan, promote and host school visits. Called Visit My Farm, the project (launched Tuesday 28th June) at Devereux Wootton, Norton Canon, Hereford - provides a wealth of information, resources and ideas to help farmers open for educational visits.

Improving the performance, health and long term sustainability of soil was the focus of this year’s LEAF stand at Cereals. Farmers were encouraged to brush up on their soils skills by adopting Six Simple Steps to soil management, looking at structure, drainage, compaction, soil organic matter status, soil pH and nutrients and biological health. These steps to help improve soil performance are featured in LEAF’s new ‘Simply Sustainable Soils’ brochure, developed in partnership with Asda.

The LEAF Marque has been recognised in Defra’s recently released plans for new standards of food procurement across all Government departments and agencies. The LEAF Marque is cited as a solution within the new standards as one of the ways the Government can meet its new sustainability targets.
