Tim Lewis, Arable, Dairy and Beef Farmer

Tim and his father took over the tenancy of Shotford Hall Farm in 2000. They run a 147 cow dairy herd. Some are bred with Holsteins to give replacement heifers and bulls to finish on barley. Others are bred with Limousins and Belgian Blues to supply a local suckler herd with replacement heifers and steers for finishing.

Nick Rowsell, Arable Farmer

Nick, together with his father, farm West Stoke Farm on the Hampshire Downs, just north of Winchester. West Stoke Farms forms part of John Rowsell Limited, which is a complex and dispersed enterprise, with land situated on two main sites. Some 140 hectares are in agri-environment schemes. Nick does not follow a rigid crop rotation but balances his decisions based on sound agronomics and market conditions.

David and Jo Clarke, Dairy Farmers

The Clarkes have been farming in Leicestershire for generations. David and Jo split away from the family farming partnership five years ago, and now run their own 70 hectare dairy farm near Market Bosworth. Most of the feed is grown on the farm and calving takes place all year round to ensure a consistent supply of milk.

They diversified into cheese making in 2005 and currently, half their milk is used to make 50 tonnes of cheese, including Sparkenhoe Red Leicester, Bosworth Field and Battlefield Blue, which is all LEAF Marque certified. Click here to view their case study online or download a printable PDF.

 


Jon Hammond, Vegetable Farmer

Jon is a fourth generation fresh produce grower based on the outskirts of Nottingham. The 690 hectare farm produces potatoes, carrots, leeks, parsnips, cereals, spring green, tenderstem broccoli, other brassicas, rhubarb and a range of organic crops.

The Hammond family are founder members of Sherwood Produce, an eight member producer group farming 6,500 hectares across the East Midlands, supplying to major retailers as well as manufacturing and food service customers. Click here to view the case study online or download a printable PDF.

 


David Felce, Arable Farmer

David and his wife, Hayley, farm Midloe Grange Farm, a lowland arable farm near Huntingdon on the Cambridgeshire/Bedfordshire border. The whole farm has been in a Countryside Stewardship Scheme (CSS) since 1992. As well as working full time on the farm, David provides agronomy services and gives nutritional advice to a number of local farms. He has also set up his own discussion group with local farmers.
